The Gordon Research Conferences
The Gordon Research Conferences provide an international forum for the presentation and discussion of frontier research in the biological, chemical and physical sciences, and their related technologies.
The National Academies
The National Academies perform an unparalleled public service by bringing together committees of experts in all areas of scientific and technological endeavor. These experts serve pro bono to address critical national issues and give advice to the federal government and the public.
Four organizations comprise the Academies: the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the National Academy of Engineering, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the National Research Council.
National Cancer Policy Board (NCPB)
The National Cancer Policy Board was established in 1997 at the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council to address broad policy issues that affect cancer in the United States and to recommend ways to advance the Nation's effort against cancer. The board, consisting of 20 members drawn from outside the federal government, includes health care consumers, providers, and researchers in a variety of disciplines in the sciences and humanities.
Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG)
The RTOG is a multi-institutional cooperative organization, of which the principal objectives include:
- A national cancer study research group funded by NCI headquartered in Philadelphia with almost 30 years of experience in running clinical trials.
- Comprised of 250 of the major research institutions in the U.S. and Canada.
- Currently have more than 40 active studies that involve radiation therapy either alone or in conjunction with surgery and/or chemotherapeutic drugs.
- Interested in quality of life issues and their effects on the cancer patient.
Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI)
Based on presentations and discussions from a course developed by HHMI and the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, this book is a collection of practical advice, experiences, and opinions from seasoned biomedical investigators and other professionals. Also contains an overview of the course and lessons learned.
