Washington, D.C.
March 22-24, 2009

For more information, please select from the list below:

ASTRO’s Advocacy Day 2009 allows radiation oncologists to learn about important healthcare legislative issues from experienced Washington policymakers. Participants in this annual event also visit Capitol Hill to advocate policies that protect the future of radiation oncology.

Please note:  There have been significant changes in the travel policy from previous years; please read the revised policy.

Attention Radiation Oncology Residents:
New Travel Policy Application Process

ASTRO has revised its travel policy for Advocacy Day 2009 in Washington. Per the policy, ASTRO will cover a two-night stay at the meeting’s hotel and group food functions but will not cover attendee travel expenses, such as airfare, miles or other forms of transportation.

We recognize that radiation oncology residents are key to the future of radiation oncology and face financial constraints different than that of other attendees. To balance ASTRO’s budgetary constraints with our desire to maintain active resident participation in Advocacy Day, ASTRO’s Board of Directors has approved the following application process for residents who desire travel grants to help defray Advocacy Day travel costs.

Please write a one-page letter explaining why attending Advocacy Day is important to advancing your career and your profession. In addition, please submit an accompanying letter from your program director recommending your attendance. Please list your expected travel costs in your letter and send letters to Nora Ribble (fax: 703-839-7383), grassroots and PAC coordinator immediately upon registration.

ASTRO staff and Government Relations Council chairs will review applicant letters and recommendations from program directors. For those applicants who are approved, ASTRO will cover up to $400 in additional travel costs to offset the cost of airfare or other travel expenses. These travel grants are limited and not all applicants will be approved for the additional funds. If applicants explore more economical means of transport, like driving or the train, more applicants may be supported. Because of their leadership positions, ARRO Executive Committee members are exempt from the application process. Residents who want to attend Advocacy Day but do not need travel support will still have their two-night hotel stay covered by ASTRO. They are still recommended to advise their program director of their plans to participate if they are not taking vacation time.

Thank you for your understanding. Please contact Dave Adler, assistant director of government relations, with any questions.
