Advocacy Day 2008
Advocacy Day 2009
-
March 22-24, Washington, D.C.
Again, ASTRO’s Advocacy Day broke previous records for the number of attendees and states represented. There were 114 ASTRO members from 43 states in attendance for the premier annual advocacy event. Those gathered for the fifth annual event also met with the offices of 170 members of Congress, educating them about the practice of radiation oncology, stopping Medicare physician payment cuts and increasing cancer research funding. In particular, Advocacy Day attendees urged senators to support a proposal by Sens. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) and Arlen Specter (R-Penn.) to boost funding for the National Institutes of Health by 10.24 percent, or an additional $2.1 billion. The amendment passed by a vote of 94-6.
This year’s Advocacy Day was the most successful fundraising effort to date. With help from ASTRO President-Elect Tim Williams, M.D., and ASTRO PAC Chair Wayne Jenkins, M.D., ASTRO PAC raised more than $28,000 during the March 9-11 meeting – besting last year's Advocacy Day fundraising mark by $10,000.
